San Francisco, CA, September 28, 2022 — The Canvas drywall finishing robot won top honors at the 2022 Pro Tools Innovation Awards (PTIA) last week, winning first place in the Technology/Robotics category. 2022 is only the second year that PTIA has included a Technology/Robotics category. Last year, Hilti Jaibot took first place in this category for its robot that drills holes in concrete ceilings.
Canvas Difference: When hand-finishing drywall, the seams between drywall panels are connected with (usually fire-resistant) tape. To make the tape “disappear” or appear flat from the wall, four additional coats of putty or drywall grout will be required on top of the fire tape. Each layer must be dried and then sanded before applying the next.
The Canvas Drywall Finisher can work on Class 5 walls (plaster and sand) and Class 4 directional paint walls (plaster only). In level 5 mode, the entire wall is sprayed only once (on wet fire lanes). Once dry, the walls are sanded by machine to achieve the desired high quality finish. The process takes up to two days with an intermediate drying cycle. In level 4 mode, apply only the seams of the fire tape to the wall (the fire tape may be wet). After drying, the walls are sanded in the traditional way. With directional spray classes 5 and 4, the mud process requires only one coat of joint compound and one dry cycle before sanding.
Canvas trains customers to operate their machines regardless of their skill level. The training takes about five days. Training includes how to safely operate the device, guide the device to scan walls and create a workspace, and troubleshoot.
PTIA’s diverse panel of judges, which includes contractors, construction business owners, tradespeople and media professionals, evaluate tools and machines that represent the world’s most innovative products for building and outdoor power equipment.
“Many of the latest winning products have shown significant improvements in site efficiency, safety and/or productivity,” said Clint DeBoer, Executive Director of the Pro Tools Innovation Awards. “The Canvas system fits the bill.
