How to turn a broom or mop handle into sandpaper when laying drywall

When renovating a home, there are often projects that require the installation of drywall. The key tool for this project is the sanding rod, especially when sanding ceilings and high walls. The length and flexibility of the sanding rod make it ideal for sanding hard-to-reach areas and providing a flat, smooth drywall surface with constant pressure. However, if you don’t have this specialized tool, a little creativity can be a game changer. If you have an old broom handle, you can easily turn it into a useful polishing rod in just a few steps.
Broom and mop handles are generally strong, long enough, and provide the flexibility you need—qualities that make them an ideal alternative to professional sanding rods. This impromptu tool can be the solution when professional grinding rods are not available. The following steps will walk you through this project and help you complete your drywall project.
Before you begin, double check that the handle is strong and in good condition. It must withstand all aspects of sanding without breaking. If it looks weak, replace or strengthen it as needed. The first step is to disassemble the broom section by unscrewing or unscrewing it. When using sponge mops, it is not necessary to remove the nozzle from the handle.
Then check the handle for roughness or chips. If you find any problems, use sandpaper to smooth them out, which can increase safety and holding comfort. This makes handling the broom handle in general much safer and easier to use in the future!
Measure the top of the handle. This measurement will allow you to purchase the right size sanding head that is easy to install. Sanding attachments can be purchased at most hardware stores or online. Remember, the larger the sanding head, the more sanding jobs you can do in less time.
After creating the handle, it’s time to attach the grinding head. When buying, double check if they match the measurements you took for the pen. One of the advantages of the sanding head is its universal thread, which allows it to be easily mounted on various handles.
Once you find the right sanding head, attaching it to your broom handle is relatively easy. Screw the top end of the handle onto the grinding head and make sure it is securely tightened. You will need to simulate sanding with little pressure to make sure it is safe. If your head remains secure and shows no signs of wobble or loosening, the sanding head has been installed successfully. For a sponge mop, you simply place the appropriate length of sandpaper on a dry, clean sponge and attach it to the head in the same way you would with sponge clamps.
Next, you need to securely hold the sandpaper on the sanding head for efficient and even sanding when working on the drywall surface. Make sure the sanding head is clean and free of sandpaper or debris. This ensures that the dots stick easily to the new sandpaper. Accurately align the sandpaper with the sanding attachment, making sure it covers the entire surface area. Attach the sandpaper to the sanding head. This process may vary depending on your instrument, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Typically, sandpaper can be secured with clips, glue, or a hook and loop system. Carefully check the sandpaper attachment. It should sit firmly in place and not move or loosen when pressure is applied.
